A Complete Guide To Cigar Smoking Etiquette

Smoking cigars might be a great source of delight in your life, but the courteous smoker knows that not everyone enjoys the taste (or scent!) of a good Cuban. With the fervor of anti-smoking movements still in full swing, the importance of savoring a good stogie while not offending others can’t be emphasized sufficiently. Remember that it can be difficult to guess the scent that others feel while you’re smoking a cigar. A strong residue can be left on just about any surface that cigar smoke touches, for instance furniture, clothing, and walls. In order to enjoy your stogie without a heavy sense of right and wrong, learn to become a considerate and polite cigar smoker.

If you live with non-smokers, try to find a ventilated area in your home where you can smoke your cigars comfortably. Although you may be tempted to smoke in your bedroom or office, it’s generally not a good idea to smoke in an enclosed area without some sort of ventilation such as a window. Go outside to smoke, if possible, so that you never inhale the toxic air that is present when smoking in an enclosed area. Pull up a lawn chair, or relax on the porch as long as you go as far away as possible from non-smokers, such as the elderly and children, so that you can smoke your cigar comfortably without endangering their health. Remember that cigar smoke contains many carcinogens that can be easily inhaled by non-smokers.

If you must smoke a cigar outside your home, remember that the courteous and respectful smoker will only light up where legally permitted. Avoid smoking your cigar in places that prohibit it, such as a bar, hotel, or restaurant. Be sure to ask for permission from non-smokers to light up in their presence, as this is the courteous and polite thing to do. If they agree, be considerate about it and make sure the smoke isn’t wafting in their direction. Be careful when sitting near air conditions or windows, as this often causes the smoke to move in unpredictable directions. Also, take note that non-smokers that are eating are not present, as the secondhand smoke is a surefire way of ruining their meal.

A courteous cigar smoker will also be aware of their ashes so if you must smoke outside your home, make certain to dispose of your ashes in a safe and appropriate container. Be careful when around other people, as cigar ashes tend to blow away easily, especially in the lower quality cigars.
